Our society has progressed a lot in the past decades. We’ve solved, or attempted to solve, many social and political issues that plague us. However, it seems like there’s one issue that we’ve swept under the rug and tried to cover up: sexual assault and pedophelia, mainly in the Catholic Church.

As a member of the church, it’s extremely depressing to see how they’ve always handled these allegations. It seems like all the church does is relocate the priest being accused. With the recent conviction of Australian Cardinal George Pell, who was the Vatican Treasurer, I wondered how Pope Francis would react and handle the cases of pedophelia in the church; Pell was a close advisor to the Pope.

During a summit held on Thursday, February 21, the pope said, “We are thus facing a universal problem, tragically present almost everywhere and affecting everyone. Yet we need to be clear, that while gravely affecting our societies as a whole, this evil is in no way less monstrous when it takes place within the Church.”

While Pell was still the Archbishop of Melbourne in the mid-nineties, he made two altar-boys perform crude acts after he said that they stole some church wine. After this information came out, Pell was immediately removed from Pope Francis’ inner circle. The cardinal was also told that he is no longer allowed around children.

Pell could face up to fifty years in prison, even though he’s seventy-seven years old, I think he should have a life sentence. One can only pray that Pell will be convicted and not just relocated.
