K-Pop is making its rise as groups such as BTS are becoming more appealing to their western audience. These Korean based music artists are making their mark on American soil, even winning different music awards here in the U.S.

BLACKPINK, a K-Pop group comprised of four girls, is one of the more popular in South Korea and they are being recognized in the U.S. as well. Their third mini album ‘SQUARE UP’ was released earlier this year in June after a one year break. They came back stronger than ever with a new style and a positive mentality.

What fans weren’t expecting was another release in November. This release, however, wasn’t from all four members of the group. One of the members of the group, Jennie, had announced that she was releasing a solo single. Although she released ‘SOLO,’ she is still an active member of BLACKPINK.

Since the release of ‘SOLO’ on November 12th, it has won multiple awards and reached number one on Billboard’s World Digital Songs Sale chart, making Jennie the first ever K-Pop female solo artist to top the chart.

Jennie received a Melon Music Award, basically a South Korean equivalent to a Grammy, for her hit. She also won first place on Inkigayo, a South Korean music TV program. Her first solo song is making strides.

The song features both Korean and English lyrics. Jennie is fluent in both languages, having lived in New Zealand for a portion of her life. She also raps in the song, which is all in English.

The song is very upbeat, lyrics all about being independent after a break up. The choreography is full of elegance, but also includes a sultry vibe. She’s showing that she can be a strong, independent woman and doesn’t need the toxic relationship she had.

‘SOLO’ has opened a K-Pop door for me. Although I have listened to different K-Pop groups in the past, I was never invested enough to actually be a fan. After hearing ‘SOLO’ for the first time, and then venturing off to other BLACKPINK songs, I have truly found a passion for their music. I appreciate how they’re appealing to their international listeners with frequent English lyrics, especially in ‘SOLO.’

You may not think K-Pop is for you, but do your digging and find the right group. There are so many to choose from, and they might even surprise you.
