In the summertime, it is fun to go outside and enjoy fun in the sun. As the weather starts to change and gets colder, many people begin to avoid the outdoors. Something you can do indoors that is fun is watch movies. Here are some movie releases for this month that I have been anticipating.

Venom

Good superhero films have the magic of pulling you into a world of the unknown. You get to fulfill your fantasies of having superpowers through the movie’s characters. Although this movie is a superhero movie, it focuses on the origin of the villain.

I wouldn’t classify main character Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) as a bad guy; he is just a person who finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. Brock is an investigative reporter who discovers that Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed) is experimenting with alien parasites on humans. Drake believes that the union between the two is the next phase in our evolution. Brock inevitably gets possessed by an alien parasite.

Unlike Spider-Man’s origin story, Brock’s new superpowers give him the desire to hurt people. I’m really excited to see Brock’s inner struggle with the monster within. Obviously we know that he ends up losing this battle, but what drives him and what fuels the monster within? So many superhero movies focus solely on good impulses of characters, but Venom explores people’s darker urges, which is something that I find very intriguing.

A Star is Born

Musician Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper) falls for Ally (Lady Gaga), a struggling artist who is just about to give up on her dream of making it big as a singer. With some coaxing, Maine brings her into the spotlight. Although this seems like a write-off romance movie, the trailer hints that Maine has some personal demons that he is struggling with. What I’m most looking forward to with this movie, though, is the music. In the trailer, everything is set up perfectly to hear Ally’s voice. She faces constant rejection for how she looks, rather than how well she sings. This gave me the sense that she could sing, but she was never given a chance. When Maine brings her onstage, you can feel that this is her moment. When she sings her opening note, I was like, “Dang! Gaga can sing!” I have listened to some of Gaga’s music before, such as hits “Poker Face” and “Just Dance,” but this, this was unlike anything I’ve ever heard. It sounded so beautiful and pure. I found myself constantly looping the trailer, just to hear her voice.

Mid90s

While watching YouTube videos, I stumbled upon a trailer for this movie and it caught my attention. This movie prides itself on being nostalgic with its music and the way it’s shot, but at its core, this movie is a coming of age story. Stevie (Sunny Suljic) struggles to see eye to eye with his brother. The two fight constantly, making his home life seem troubled. Stevie finds his way out of all the chaos through skateboarding. Don’t get me wrong: movies like Venom are fun, but sometimes it’s nice to have a movie that is relatable, with characters that you can connect with, empathize with, and understand because you’ve been there, too.
