Summer vacation is right around the corner and many people think that there is nothing that they can do around Highland. Little do they know, there is a vast number of things that they can do around here once summer hits.

Memorial Day weekend signals that water parks are going to open shop. For $20-22 you can buy a pass for the day to Deep River Waterpark in Merrillville.

For only $10 a person, you can enjoy a fun night under the stars with some snacks while watching a good movie from you car. This event is known as the 49’rs drive-in movie theater located in Valparaiso. They offer a good variety of things that you can do once summer starts for a small price.

Another option that is free is starting June 5th. Every Tuesday, Millennium Park shows movies in the park. All you need a is blanket and a friend, and you are set for the night.

You can go stargazing and see the rings of Saturn, the Perseid Meteor Shower and the Venus-Jupiter Conjunction this summer at the Conway Observatory at Buckley Homestead in Lowell.

Take the train to downtown Chicago for $7.25 and walk around, admiring the scenery of several parks.

Go camping at Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park in Portage and bring your friends or family with you.

Take a tour around a local art gallery called White Ripple Gallery in Hammond.

Take your friends or family to Fair Oaks Farms in Fair Oaks and learn all kinds of things about farming and animals you never knew for a small price of $20.

Grab some sheets and watch the sunset at one of the beaches around us, like Whihala Beach in Whiting, then take a walk around the beautiful boardwalk.
