Have you ever felt compelled to buy in-game currency, a rare overpowered weapon, a DLC (downloadable content), or something else that everyone is playing with?

Microtransactions are when a company gives players the opportunity to buy something inside the game. This now seems to be appearing everywhere in video games. Microtransactions are usually in free-to-play games so that the company has a chance of gaining their money back.

According to Gabe Duverge, a physiologist from Touro University Worldwide, some tactics for using microtransactions include using “in-game currency” to make it look like you are getting a better deal, “random chance purchases” that could have more valuable items than the price of the container (such as loot boxes), and “in-game items” that will give upgrades that could potentially “make the game easier.”

Deverge also said, “Microtransactions are rooted in human psychology.”

One way they manipulate your mind is loss of aversion which uses a gamer’s need to win into a reason for an impulse buy.

Games such as Overwatch use microtransactions to sell cosmetics using the loot box system. Loot boxes are a random chance system to get cosmetics such as costumes, hair styles, looks, etc. Two loot boxes in the game Overwatch costs $1.99.

Games, such as Call of Duty, sell DLCs which includes new maps and weapons for around $15 for one map pack and $50 for all four map packs. In total there is about 16 maps per game.

These are only a few examples of how many games use microtransactions. Video game numbers have risen everyday, whether it is due to someone making a joke about the video game or through regular advertising techniques. Regardless of what drives consumers to their products, it seems that microtransactions in games are now the way of the future.
