Every year around spring time, mother ducks come to the courtyard to lay their eggs. It is thought that the ducks choose to lay their eggs here because it is a safe space away from all other wild animals that could bring harm to the mother duck’s babies.

Once the eggs hatch, you see little ducklings waddling behind their mom, following her wherever she goes. Their time in the courtyard is short lived as soon after the eggs are hatched, the ducklings and the mom are lead out.

Daytime custodial foreman Tom Marjai said, “We need to lead the ducks out of the courtyard because the crows will come and attack the babies. They will literally pick them up and kill them, so that’s why we walk them out every season.”

“I think they are the same moms that come back because they know the routine. I feel like a duck whisperer because all I have to do is go behind them and open the door and say, ‘Go mama.’ Then they just walk out. On occasion, there will be a difficult mother duck who will not want to leave, and fly around and attack me, but usually it goes well,” says Marjai.

The ducks are all led safely to the ditch near the school and do not return until the next spring.
