On April 26th, Highland track held its seasonal invite meet. The meet consisted of 13 teams from lake county schools.

Freshman Lucas Gurrea ran a 4 minutes, 31.99 seconds mile and came in first place. Besides the one mile, the Highland boys’ track team also placed first in the 400 meter and the two mile.

After running his one event, the one mile, sophomore Ben Salinas went to the hospital with a case of Bronchitis. (Pictured left to right: sophomore Ben Salinas and freshman Lucas Gurrea)

Boys’ track coach Corey Bailey said, “I think we did a great job. Lots of personal records were made and it was great to have Ben Salinas back to run his first race this season.”

Highland came in top in in three of the multiple field events such as junior Tyler Scheidt in high jump and sophomore Victoria Guerrero in long jump.

Sophomore Mateo Garcia said, “Our team is doing really good. Everyone is running strong and well. I was really proud of the freshman who ran a 4:31 mile.”

Garcia believes their strongest events are the mile and two mile, especially in recent years.

Highland is known for excelling in distance events, but senior Tristan Celmer thinks the team should work on hurdles.

Celmer said, ”We need guys to come out and try the 110 meter hurdles. It’s something we need to improve upon.”

Other athletes believe we should train harder for events like long jump or 100 meter dash.

Junior Michaela Schmidt, who placed second in high jump, said, “I feel like there has been a lot of personal records and everyone’s just really happy.I was kind of disappointed (with my results) because my personal record is 5’1” (in high jump) and I couldn’t clear 5’, but I’m happy to get second (place).”

Although sophomore Victoria Guerrero placed fourth in the hurdles final, she continues to excel in her other events.

The meet resulted in the boys’ track team winning first place with 133.5 points, and the girls placed second with 96.5 points. This was the boys’ second year win at the Highland invite and many athletes could not be happier.

Bailey said, “Lucas and Ben were great in the one mile, (senior) Gannon Grider with throwing… we did all around great today.”

Field events, such as boys’ pole vault, gave Highland the points they needed to win.
