Highland High School recently got a new addition to the commons area: new benches to replace the carpet covered ones. In addition to these new benches in the commons, additional lunch tables were added in the cafeteria as well. Does having the additional lunch tables and benches in the commons make one of those areas more or less crowded?

These benches are not placed throughout the entire commons area. Only three out of the six benches have been replaced. The new benches are smaller and can not fit as many people on them.

“They look like park benches,” sophomore Mason Plebanski said.

Most students’ reaction to these new benches upon us coming back from spring break is not very positive. Some students say they are too small and are not very pretty to look at.

The new benches may have an effect on where students enjoy their lunch. Do more students eat in the cafeteria or the commons?

“I sit in the cafeteria because it is open for me, and me and my friends have more room,” Plebanski said.

Others like the commons for the same reason. Senior Hailey Espinoza thinks that more people sit in the cafeteria because most of the tables are usually full.

“I prefer sitting in the cafeteria. There are more tables and all my friends sit in there,” sophomore Nico Solis said. “It’s a lot more open in my opinion.”

Many students such as Solis prefer sitting in the cafeteria because they find it easier to socialize.

The custodians have a word or two about these new benches and what they think. Their opinion on the benches is the opposite of the kids at HHS.

The night custodian Tom Marjai said, “We love the new benches! They are more easier to clean.”

The custodians had an issue with keeping the old benches clean due to the food and drinks. Custodians enjoy the new benches because, “all you do is wipe them down.”
