ISTEP testing here at Highland High School is a very stressful time. Teachers and students have so much to worry about. One of the bigger issues is that the staff has not found the perfect plan for the students who are not testing.

Some teachers and faculty members had different ideas for what student who are not testing should do during testing time.

Social studies teacher Terry Steenson said, “Study hall is the best option, especially for those who really appreciate the study hall.”

Changing the way we have students be productive during testing might ease up the stress for some.

“Running a study hall and having those who want to go to the study hall go there, but then plan activities and have kids sign up for those activities so everyone can choose where they go, but have it all be supervised,” said Steenson.

English teacher Jodi Olah said that “what the staff does is not that bad, but last time it didn’t go so well, due to the freshman incident.”

Guidance coordinator Kelly Gossman plans and administers the test. The guidance department does not see any problem with what non-testers do during testing time.

“The loud is separated from the quiet,” Gossman said.

The guidance office does not experience any of the hiccups that the staff, who monitor the test, may experience.

Should Highland change what we for students who do not test? Is the system working for the staff and students at our school?

Even though the Highland staff is not all in agreement that the system should be changed or not, changing it completely might add more complications.
