Started off the day with a phone call and a rush to the school because I had slept in. Buses had left at 5:50 am to depart on a three hour drive to Perry Meridian High School in Indianapolis to participate in the ISSMA (Indiana State School Music Association) State Competition.

Between students sleeping and listening to music to pass the time, the bus was dead silent. Even the chaperones would nap on and off. Around 8 am Eastern Standard Time, students were snacking, planning the day, and discussing the musical auditions.

The students kept all of their belongings in the school’s cafeteria. Many students who did not perform until many hours later would use their spare time to eat or watch others perform. My group had a hour to spare between warming up and performing.

After performing and receiving our scores, we waited for what felt like forever, rethinking every bit of the song we performed and what might have gone wrong.

Everyone went their separate ways to get food or buy an ISSMA shirt to remember this day. Others waited to share how each other did. Around 11:30 am, I went to eat and go home with my friend, ending the day of ISSMA.
