Junior Gavy Marks is the first female to wrestle varsity for Highland High School. Female athletes have become more involved and accepted on school wrestling teams, including our very own. Other high schools, such as Crown Point and Highland, have had female junior varsity wrestlers in past years, but it is more unusual to earn a varsity spot on the team.

Marks said, “I feel good, actually (about being the first female to be on a varsity spot). I hope I can be an influence on other girls.”

Being one of the few female wrestlers is not all fun and games, according to Marks.

“Being a female in this sport is very hard because I have different body parts and guys don’t know where to grab. Also guys don’t want to be beat by a girl so they will either go extra hard on us (girls) or they will take it easy and let me win,” said Marks.

Marks is not the only female wrestler at Highland and this is not the first time we have had female wrestlers.

Marks said, “Girls have been on the team before, but they quit before they got the chance to wrestle in a varsity spot.”

On January 19th, Marks will be wrestling at Girls’ State. Marks thinks she will do well and has just been getting better since this is her first year.

Although Marks does not believe HHS will have enough girls to make a girls’ team, she is very optimistic.

“Currently we only have two girls including myself, but you never know. Maybe us girls can be an inspiration to others,” said Marks.

Marks thinks any girl who is thinking about joining wrestling should take her advice and “just go for it.”
