On Tuesday, December 12, the Lady Trojans took on the Crown Point Bulldogs. In the last minutes of the fourth quarter, Crown Point took the win as they moved to 6-6 and Highland fell to 4-7.

The game saw plenty of action as Highland kept Crown Point within five points for nearly the whole game. Highland had lots of turnovers, which led to a lot of fast break points for Crown Point. There was not a lot of action in the first half, as Crown Point led 21-18.

The second half was more intense. Highland came back with 13 points, holding Crown Point to nine in the third quarter. Crown Point had foul trouble, racking up eight in the quarter. Highland earned the bonus with two minutes left in the quarter. Highland played aggressive defense, forcing lots of turnovers. By the end of the quarter, Highland came back and led 31-30.

Highland started out hot in the fourth quarter with easy layups, open shots, and getting to the free throw line. Crown Point missed a lot of their free throw opportunities, leading to more points for Highland. After a timeout by Crown Point coach Chris Seibert, they played more aggressively down the stretch, shooting the ball, forcing turnovers, rebounding the ball and making their shots. Highland tried keeping up, but the Crown Point push was too much, resulting in a Highland loss, 59-54.

Seibert said it was a good contest between two good teams. “I’m proud of the kids’ effort. Highland had a couple of good runs, where we could have folded, and I thought their perseverance was outstanding. To find a way, in the last two minutes to come back and get a win in a tough environment against a good team, I’m very proud of them.”

When asked about the aggressive play in the fourth quarter, Seibert said, “Definitely, most of these games come down to the last two or three minutes, and I thought about us attacking the basket and getting to the free throw line. We got a couple really big rebounds down the stretch offensively by Taylor Tyndall, and overall was very pleased after the game tonight.”

Head coach Tracie Mezera-Juarez said, “We wish we could have won it. I think we played well. It just came down to getting a few stops in the fourth quarter and we didn’t do that. I was a little disappointed, but I thought as a team we played well together. (During the fourth quarter) we were both trading baskets, but it came down to those last two offensive rebounds off the free throws we missed. I don’t think it was just them, but I think we were both scoring at will and we just needed to get a few more stops.”

Highland heads to Lowell next to play the Red Devils on December 14th. Top scorers were junior Michaela Schmidt of Highland with 20 points and senior Mya Scheidt of Crown Point with 29 points.
