On Wednesday, December 6th, Highland faced one of their biggest school competitors, Munster, in wrestling. Highland had a very successful win with eight pins and a total score of 64-14.

Coach Chris Kirincic has been the wrestling coach for four years and said that he was “tickled pink” by the outcome of this meet. In the past there has been close matches between Highland and Munster, but over the last two years Highland has managed to put a pretty good gap in the final scores.

“You always want to, as a coach, put your wrestlers against the best possible competition because the tougher the competition the better you become as an athlete, as a wrestler,” said Kirincic.

For some wrestlers, such as junior William Akanbi, this was their first time wrestling against Munster and it added a lot of heat into their matches.

“Going against Munster felt like we had pressure under our back. Especially since we haven’t lost to them in wrestling. We went into the meet knowing we were gonna show the fruit of our hard work and the results were an accurate representation of the hard work we put in,” said Akanbi.

Senior Lee Covarrubias felt very accomplished of his win, which he achieved by pinning someone.

“Facing Munster in any sport is always a huge thing. It left a bad taste when Munster beat us this football season but crushing their team took some of the sting away,” said Covarrubias.

The whole team is very proud of this past meet and will continue to train and prepare for future challenges to improve as a whole.
