Early release on Wednesday has been taking place at Highland high school for a few years. It started because teachers and administrators have meetings every Wednesday and the school district decided it would be better to release school early so that teachers would not be held after school as late.

Many other schools have policies like this as well, such as the Hobart school district. Unlike Highland’s policy, their school has a delay in the morning instead.

For Hobart, late start Wednesdays has gone on since 2009. Contrary to popular belief, Hobart’s superintendent Dr. Peggy Buffington says that their attendance on Wednesdays has actually been better since this has began. It also is beneficial for students because they get to sleep in and do not have to wait for their coaches to get out of meetings after school.

Teachers like Shana Janes has to change up her schedule because of the Wednesday early release. Because she is a cooking teacher, the early release requires her to break up labs and reschedule the week around it. When it comes to early release or late start, she prefers early release to make it easier on parents so they can make sure to have a secure child care system everyday.
Some students, such as senior Estevan Ramirez, also prefer the way that Highland has its schedule now.

“I prefer the early release because I have a schedule in the morning when I wake up and I like how it is. And it’s cool to be able to go home early and just have so much free time,” Ramirez said.

Other students like junior Matt Roach and senior Ariann Chavez would rather have late start. Roach would prefer it because he is in a lot of honors programs and says he is a student who tends to stay up late doing homework, so it would be nice to sleep in.

Chavez said, “I would much rather get to sleep in in the mornings and feel more caught up on sleep for school so that I’m more prepared for the day.”
